Shenyang International Ice and Snow Festival

Shenyang International Ice and Snow Festival combine recreation, sports and sight-seeing; it attracts millions of visitors from around the world each year in Shenyang City, Liaoning Province. Dependent upon the weather, the festival can last for up to a month during the period from December to February and always gets under way with a magnificent opening ceremony. The Dongbeiya Ski Resort, the Qipanshan (Chessboard Hill) Ski Resort, and the Baiqingzhai Ski Resort are the main venues involved. There are three sections for the festival: the Ice and Snow Sculpture Area, the Entertainment Area and the Alpine Skiing Area.

The festival is composed of the Ice and Snow Sculpture Area, the Entertainment Area and the Alpine Skiing Area. In Ice and Snow Sculpture Area, tourists can enjoy all kinds of snow carvings, such as palaces, huge animals and natural landscape. In Entertainment Area, tourists can enjoy themselves with a great variety of ski equipments and take an active part in all kinds of activities, including racing, skating in the evening, shooting and playing football on the snow. Besides, all kinds of new activities hold every year give tourists a real surprise. In Alpine Skiing Area, ski equipments can be rented and adventurous and exciting activities provide tourists an unforgettable experience. 

Special performances are staged during the festival, such as folklore shows, circus performances, fire dragon and traditional Man ethnic minority dances. The program of events changes each year to incorporate new and exciting activities. For instance, in 2007 there were sleds pulled by reindeers driven by Santa Clause and autos driven on the ice. For the keen photographer great views of the ice and snow world may be seen from big balloons drifting in the sky. Commercial interests are catered for in special regions for business services, aiming to facilitate international and national economic intercourses and transactions.

The organizers of the festival strive to make the event attractive and exhilarating for everyone from home and abroad and are looking forward to its continuing success with confidence and enthusiasm. It is undoubtedly a not to be missed destination for visitors traveling in China during the winter.

On December 27, 2014, the festival was unveiled with a flash mob show at the Dongzhong pedestrian street in the Dadong District of Shenyang. It is said that the flash mob show will be performed again at Taiyuan pedestrian street in Heping District, Lotte Department Store in Huanggu District, 1905 Innovation Park in Tiexi District, Cloud Nine Shopping mall in Dadong District and Xinglong Da’aolai Shopping Center.

Excluding the flash mob show, more than 100 other kinds of activities under 10 themes are held during the festival, including ice and snow sculptures, ice and snow entertainment (skiing, snow ride, snow surfing, dog sled ride etc.), hot springs, temple and lantern fairs, winter hunting, unique delicacies, happy shopping and folk culture.
